1992 Other Oldsmobile Models changing left ball joint

1992 Other Oldsmobile Models 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic
I was changing my ball joint on the driver side cause it basically was in more then one piece. Well I have the new one on the car but i can't seem to compress the strut and place the hub back over the ball joint. With a jack pushing up and out the force of the spring is pushing the hub outward away from the car. Is there anyway to compress the spring without a tool or could i just keep wrapping wire around the spring to keep it compressed while i slide the ball joint into the hub?
