Engine Performance problem
1986 Oldsmobile Firenza 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

Ok so I was sitting at a red light. All of a sudden my car cuts off. It didn't sputter, or stall, it just cut off. Still had power, but the engine wasn't running. So I pushed it into a parking lot. In the parking lot, and over 3 days, we changed the alternator, ignition module, distributor cap, spark plus, and ignition coil wire. Still couldn't get it to start. So we had it toed.

We got it where we wanted it and started working on it again. After we got it stable we tried spraying starter fluid into the carb, pouring gas in it. Nothing is working. The whole time we've had to keep jumper cables connected because the battery will go dead from trying to start it over and over.

I think maybe the timing chain could be off, but I don't know. And if that is it I don't know how to get to it.

Any suggestions on what could be going on and what to do about it? Thanks!

You need to check the compression in the engine to tell if timing is off. You can usually borrow one from your parts store if you leave them a deposit. 125 psi is what each cylinder should read

Ok. Can you tell me how to use one? Or will they tell me how to at the store? Im not big on car repair, but im getting there with this car.

Also, if the timing is off can I get to it myself? Or will I need to take it to a shop?

Very easy. Just remove spark plugs and the compression tester screws in where the plug was and then you crank over engine for about 5 seconds and then read the gauge.
