Starts but then sputters and dies

1996 Oldsmobile Delta 88 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 309750 miles
I can start the engine, rev it, put in gear then I get sputtering and it dies. Over the next few starts it gets worse and worse to the point where it won't start at all. I let it sit for a few hours and it all repeats.
