Electrical problem
1992 Oldsmobile Cutlass 6 cyl Automatic 100000 miles

MY CAR HAD BEEN RUNNING FINE BUT THE BATTERY WAS OLD AND WE REPLACED IT. MY SON, AGE 30, DROVE IT FOR ABOUT TWO MONTHS.WHEN HE PARKED THE CAR IT WAS WORKING FINE. WE DIDN'T USE IT FOR A MONTH. WHEN HE WENT OUT TO START IT IT WOULD NOT START. IT WAS HAULED TO THE SHOP. THEY CAN GET IT TO START WITH ETHER BUT IT WON'T STAY RUNNING. THEY PUT A NEW FUEL PUMP AND SOCK ON IT ONE YEAR AGO ALSO A NEW GAS TANK AT THE SAME TIME. THEY THINK IT MIGHT BE THE WIRING HARNESS. ARE THERE SEVERAL HARNESS FOR THIS CAR OR ARE THEY ALL IN ONE? THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR HELP.

Hi Susan,

They should be able to check the wiring. All they have to do is make sure there is proper voltage to the connection at the tank with the key in the on position. As long as there is proper voltage then it very well could be the fuel pump again.

As far as the wiring harness, if you have been driving for a year then I doubt there was a possibility of a wrong harness installed.

They should have started with the basic tests....

Fuel Pressure

Fuel Pump Relay

Check for Clogged Fuel Filter

Voltage at Tank Connection

And if all above checked out then time to remove tank and check connections at fuel pump. Straight wire fuel pump to see if it works or not.
