2000 Nissan Quest Disappearing transmission fluid

2000 Nissan Quest 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 130000 miles
My son has a 2000 Nissan Quest minivan that continually loses transmission fluid but has no visible leaks at its regular parking spaces (home & work). He recently raised the front of the vehicle to change the engine oil and when he let it down and started the vehicle it ran very poorly and large amounts of white smoke out of the tailpipe. After the van sat all night on a level surface it ran ok the next day but was then very low on transmission fluid.
