2001 Nissan Primera Automatic

I was just coming home from the store, stopped at a stop sign in the mashed the gas to go, but just crept threw the intersection. Mashed the gas almost to the floor still nothing. Did this all the way home and check engine light came on! Anyone have any idea what's going on? about 20 min later went back in the car turned the engine on and it started just fine and check engine light came off back and pedal response was good again.
