1989 Nissan Prarie idling problem

1989 Nissan Prarie 4 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 135000 miles
Hello !! i have just been given a nissan prarie 2.0 SLX 4x4 atuo on a F reg. Its been sitting still on a drive for about three months its always had a regular service. Since i have started to drive it the rev counter drops down to about 6,000 revs and upto 7,000 revs and idling dosent sound right and my nissan prarie keeps cutting out due to the revs dropping right down. I have had a look under the bonnet and all i can see wat is wrong is the rocker cover leak oil a little bit but i would'nt have thought that would cause the idling problem. Can you please help me !!
