2002 Nissan Patrol/Safari problem starting the car in when

2002 Nissan Patrol/Safari 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Manual
When i try and turn the ignition on when the engine is cold it doesnt start the first couple of times. But when it does the exhaust starts to emit a whole bunch of smoke (gray, i think). the car eventually idles and it runs smoothly. i've just changed the plugs, air filter, oil etc. Could it be an excess of unburnt fuel?
