1996 Nissan Maxima Power steering

Suspension problem
1996 Nissan Maxima 6 cyl Automatic 185964 miles

a couple weeks ago i had problems with the steering wheel and my mechanic said the power steering pump needed to be replaced. I replaced it but im noticing that a lot of power steering fluid is leaking. Does this mean i have to replace the rack and pinion ASAP or what could the problem be? Thanks

Hello –

What you need to do is to raise the car and inspect the rack for leaks at the rubber boot. If there is spurting oil around the boot, the inner rack seal must be replacing.
The rack& pinion should be fine, just the seal will need to be replaced if leak is found there. Check the pressure and return line from the pump to rack for looseness at the rack or a split rubber line causing the leak.

Raise the car (5 feet up to have better view.)
The rubber below boots, the connections lines
Are shown in the above picture.
Check for power fluid leak at those places.
The rack and pinion is not noisy, you just have a leak and the power steering pump is new.
Check them and let me know
