I just took my car in to be serviced because it was making humming noise while driving, it sounded like something was rubbing. The mechanic said that the rear wheel bearings needed replacement and it would cost about $1000. From my research online, it doesn't appear that the parts cost very much. Is this a very labor intensive process? Does it require special tools? Also, how does this happen and is it likely that other things have been damaged? Thank you for all your help.

If it were me, I would remove the caliper and rotor, check to see if you can see the bolts that hold the hub assembly on, if they are accessible, remove the sensor for the ABS so you don't damage it and remove the hub, 1000.00 sounds like way too much!
