1986 Mitsubishi Truck Bad catalytic converter?

1986 Mitsubishi Truck 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive 179000 miles

When I accelerate greater than 35mph, or try and climb a hill I get an extreme loss of power and violent shaking. It feels like I am about to stall out, as if I tried to go 3mph in 5th gear. Once I slow down the problem goes away. I have asked some auto-savvy people and they seem to think it is the catalytic converter. Could that be it or am I looking at something else entirely like the carburator?

A plugged converter would give you the loss of power but not the shaking. It sounds to me like the secondary ignition is breaking down under load but somebody experienced needs to drive it and they will be able to recognize the symptoms.
