1991 Mitsubishi Triton gear stick moves around and wont pic

1991 Mitsubishi Triton 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual 138000 miles
i have a 1991 mitsubishi triton and i was driving it the this after noon and all of a sudden i went to change into 5th and i heard a "crunch , ting ting " and the i couyld not put it into any geasr or anything unfortunateky it was peak hour traffic and i had to stop causing hold ups but eventually the tow truck came and delivired it back what cud this mean ? i pulled all the robber and stuff of from inside the car to reveal that there is only 1 of 3 bolts there ? Help ?
