Using Water

i have a 1982 mitsubishi colt 1.4 with around 160k on the clock & its been using water recently then the other day i noticed steam coming out of the exhaust and its got worse as the weeks gone on so today i took the head off thinking it was the head gasket or worse a cracked head but found nothing wrong with either. so i replaced the head gasket timing belt etc and fired her up but the problem seemed to have got worse when the motors running water just runs out of the exhaust as fast as you can fill it. the only thing i did find was a cracked exhaust valve could this cause so much water to pass through the system? thanks steve 111..
