Hi,

I replaced my back brake calipers in summer with new calipers I bought at a national parts outlet.

I live in Wisconsin and noticed when I got in it the other day the pedal went to the floor but built pressure if I pumped them.

I got underneath and notice each caliper was wet at the very bottom.

They were not wet around the piston but at the lowest part of the caliper.

It looks like they caliper is a two piece unit and it seems to be leaking right around a bolt the looks like it blts the two halfs togeher.

Not the caliper mounting bolts but a bolt that actually looks like it bolts the two calipes together.

It has been pretty cold up here lately!

Hi there,

Split calipers have "O" ring seals between th two half's, if the through bolts the hold the caliper together are at all loose the high pressure will cause a leak, try re tightening these bolts first.

THanks,

I went out this morning snug em up and bled the brakes. I tested them by slamming on them from 80 MPH 5 times.

All is good the pedal is hard and they do not appear to be leaking any more.

Is it possible that due to the severe cold we had up here last week the seal could have contracted or something and some air could have made it around the piston seal?

Or maybe some sand or salt from the road?

Hi there,

Just not sure as I live in Australia and we don't get that extreme cold, I was working on the premise that if it was leaking from the caliper it must be from the seal between the two half's, extreme heat & cold can do strange things to metals, the main things that your brakes are now serviceable and if it happens again you know where to start looking.
