I have a 95 Montero. A few days ago while sitting at a traffic light, the engine suddenly began to run rough and the CHECK ENG light came on. It was behaving like it was missing. It has three coils, each supplying spark to two cylinders. I began pulling one by one to checking spark for each. There was no spark emitting from the center coil for both electrodes which initially led me to believe it was the coil. To test this guess, I swapped coils (since there are three identical coils) thinking that if it WAS the that coil - it would not work in its new position (i.e. on two different cylinders) and I would just find a replacement coil and off I'd go.
Still euphoric with fact that I'd found the symptom in less than three minutes, It was not my lucky day. The middle coil is obviously not getting a signal. I suppose it could be a broken wire, but then logic tells me that it would have to be two broken wires and the chances of that seem remote at best.
Any diagnostic insight would be helpful. I'd like not to take it to the dealer if I can help it because it's Christmas and the baby needs new shoes.
