99 Mitsu Galant w/ 114K miles. Check engine light came on when car was put in reverse. I immediately put the car into Drive and it would not move. I gave it some gas and it moved very slowly. I took my foot off the gas and then gave it gas a again and it drove fine. I drove home (65 miles on the Turnpike) and had no problems. Got the OBDII code read and it said P1751. Today it happened to me again. I was at a light and the car would barely move. I was able to get it up to 35mph but that's about it. I've read that the relay costs $20, but my local store said it's a dealer part. I have not checked the Transmission fluid level as I don't have anyone to help me during the week. Am I in big transmission trouble?

Hi kendu90,

The shift solenoid is not that major, but you should check its connector, it might be contaminated and needs some cleaning.

You would be in big trounble if you do not rectify the problem ASAP. When the car lacks power, DO NOT try to accelerated hard, it will burn the clutches as it is in back up mode and operates only in 3rd gear.

Thank you KHLow2008. I took the car to Aamco on Saturday afternoon, of course, they were already closed. I will be bringing it back on Monday morning. At the moment, I only park my car where I do not need to reverse to start driving. It seems to only happen after a I put the car into reverse. I am confident in this Aamco as their BBB record is pretty good. Hopefully, I won't have to be the first to make a complaint.

Well, just got the call from Aamco and they said the transmission should be rebuilt. They think it's a hydraulic pressure problem. Should I be getting a second opinion?

Hi kendu90,

There is no harm in getting a second opinion but make sure they are up to the mark.

DO NOT tell them what Aamco has recommended. Just tell them your problem and let them figure out.

I got the second opinion. I took the car to Cottman Transmissions. The guy scanned it, checked the fluid, opened the fuse box, switched the headlight relay and the transmission relay and the car has been fine ever since. I am still considering contacting the BBB about Aamco's suggestion.
