When it is cold, especially in the morning, I start my car and it begins to loudly rattle. After running for a few minutes the sound goes away. When I start my car on a hot morning, in the middle of the day, or after driving it I do not hear any noise. When the noise is happening it seems to be getting progressively louder. I am not having any performance issues with the car. Other than the noise the car seems to run fine. A mechanic told me it may be the lifters. How much does a repair like that cost?

Hello -

If you need to get back with me. . ..then please let me know if your vehicle is a GS, GT, GTS, RS or Spyder GS, Spyder GT, or Spyder GTS. Also your engine size in liter.

You need to first lift the hood and let someone start the car and see where it is coming from. Does it sound like lifters. . ..internally. . ..but they sound more like a tap or clicking. . ...

I have attached a pic showing your belt tensioner. . .on the bottom the red arrow is point to an adjustment bolt. . .. . ...give it a couple of turns to tighten the pressure on the belt and see if it gets quieter. . .if so a couple more until it goes away. . ...

Let me know what you find.

Thank you for your response. My engine size is 3.0 V6. I have a 2003 GT model Eclipse. I know you said to try to tighten the belt, but if I do need to have the lifters worked on how much does that kind of service cost?

Thank you.

Hello -

Please note this is a rough estimate. Depending on the area etc it may be a little more or less. I suggest you get several quotes from different shops and this will give you a good average. Also have them let you know what they will be doing so you can compare. They may have to remove something that I don't show. . ..that would be a little more. . .. . .. . .

Hope this helps.
