1993 Mercury Tracer Rough idle

1993 Mercury Tracer 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 62000 miles
My car idles rough when sitting at a stop sign in gear. Today the rpm's jumped up past 3000 and dropped down twice and then stalled. I restarted the car and it seemed fine. do i need to repalce the idle control?

im no expert but im 25 and have worked on cars since i can remember and thats what it sounds like to me. i had a 89 ranger and the idle didnt fluxuate like that but it did start idling at 3000 rpms (high) and thats what my problem was. if the IAC (idle air control) motor goes it could idle low high and stall!good luck
