I have a 99 mercury sable that was hit in the front and the power steering lines were replaced. Now it whines. I have done the basic things to get the air out and it has been over a month now. Could there still be air and is there a way to get it out or will I have to change the power steering pump. I have looked and it is terribly difficult to get it off unless you know of an easier way. Is there? I am willing to try anything. It drives me nuts. Also the same car is surging when I begin to stop and misses. It runs down the road fine but surges when I start to stop. Thanks? It has 116,000 miles on it and it is a v6. It is a gorgeous car and runs good except for the surge and whine. I will be glad to make donation if I see that this is a reputable website.

Ford's are famous for power steering whine. Sometimes after repair they whine, somtimes they dont, sometimes the whine goes away after awhile. I have used Trans X a additive that you can pick up at your local auto parts store. You have about a 50/50 chance of it working. Most of the time the only way I have found to remove the whine is to replace the pump, but I have to admit sometimes that does not even work. As far as the surge, first have your computer checked for error codes. Be sure your fuel filter is not plugged, check your plug wires. Also, I dont care what the manufactures say spark plugs dont go 100,000 miles, at least none that I have pulled out at 100,000. Have you replaced your air filter? Start with the basic.
