I have a 2003 Mercury Sable tonight it acted as if it would not move forward up a small incline in the middle of town. We got it out of the road and towed home.
The car starts in park or neutral but when I shift into reverse or Drive or 1st the motor just rev's. The reverse lights come on and the car is stable in park (will not move ) we checked the fluid it was fine we added a lhalf quart to see if it would help.
has anyone had this problem I think its the same a Taurus. Recently we have had vandalizm problems a person has been attacking my vehicles mostly scratches on the paint does anyone think that someone cut a cable or is this a normal malfunction.

With the reverse lights coming on. And being able to start it in park or neutral we can tell the shift linkage is most likely working.

And the fluid level is full.

There isn't much else for a do-it-yourselfer to do at this point.

A transmission shop can do pressure testing on various circuits to determine what has failed.

There is 3 to 4 times as many moving parts in an automatic transmission as there is in the engine. And can boggle the mind of a brain surgeon if they haven't been trained.

Yes the fluid is full and it worked fine no problems
with no warning it stopped moving.
It knows to hold in park and start in park/neutral
backup lights come on everything I see looks fine except it will not engage in Drive or Reverse are any moving position. We will contact a transmission shop today
thanks again for your input.
I did suspect vandalism but if its internal I cant see anyone getting inside my transmission.
