1998 Mercury Mystique Engine is idling very high

My check engine light was on. The engine detector said that my EGR valve needed to be changed. My friend changed the EGR valve, and now my engine idles really high. What should I do? What other problems are usually related to high idling?

Make sure the EGR valve passages are clean of carbon that could be preventing the valve to fully close causing it to idle high and computer seeing a lean condition throwing fuel at it when not needed.
