I have replaced steering rack twice including the solenoid valve.
Replaced the pump twice. Above, at suggestion of dealer.
Replaced the pressure switch in the pressure hose.
Replaced the vaps module, and calibrated by Ford dealer.
Re-aligned front end after each rack change.
Car has been to dealers four times.
Greased all steering joints.
Still hard to steer at low speed.

Mercury dealer's final comment: we haven't got a clue what's wrong, after having the car four days.

My comment: if speed determines the amount of assist, how or where does the module get the signal to regulate pressure. Or, what else is there to check?

Help,
$840.00 invested and still no steering.

Okay, here is what I think: There is a sensor ring at the bottom of the column (see pic). This is for variable assist steering. What it does is when the column is not moving it cuts the power back from the power steering pump. One you move the wheel it sees the movement and kicks up the pressure, so you have power steering at lower speeds. At higher speeds you do not need assistance as much. You may also have experienced it over steering at higher speed too. This part is available at the dealer or most parts stores.

Thanks for the info. The ring that you refer to is it inside the passenger compartment or in the engine compartment? And please be as specific as possible.

Thanks again,
Tom Casella

I located the ring at the dash line on the steering column. I removed the coupling, spring and disk with the slots. There is no sensor type device reading the ring, what should I be looking for?

Thanks,
Tom Casella

It is a little magnetic sensor that sees the slots and determines how much steering assist you need.
