1974 Mercury Comet electrial system is dead

Check the ground running from the battery to the engine. Also check the back of the engine, there is a body ground that runs from the firewall to the back of the engine. A loose or corroded ground will cause to have speratic power but when trying to start the car the current draw is limited.
