2002 Mercedes Benz S500 speedometer does not work

2002 Mercedes Benz S500 V8 Automatic 75000 miles
all driver side dash board functions work only the speedometer does not. The speed can be determined when the cruise control is set otherwise the spped cannot be determined. The speedometer registers at times but not the correct miles per hour. The other gauges all work. Is it a cable? What else could it be? Is it lots of dough to fix?
