1995 Mercedes Benz C280 Repair Question

Gas gauge
Electrical problem
1995 Mercedes Benz C280 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 65,000 miles
gauge reads intermittently from correctly to zero with reserve light being on. My mechanic suspects this is a float problem. Being and electrical engineer, I suspect it's an electrical problem. A float problem requires removing the tank; ugh. Could such a problem exist outside the tank, e.g., bad connector or bad wiring? A friend has a 98 MB with the same problem. Is this systemic to MB?
