2006 Mercedes Benz C230 Bad fuel pump already?

2006 Mercedes Benz C230 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive 32,126 miles
Car just wouldn't start one day so called for wrecker to tow to dealership to have them look at it, I was advised the fuel pump is bad??? How can this be and is this common with Mercedez cars? I have heard horror stories that the price of the car may not kill you but the repairs will.
