1998 Mercedes Benz C200 Gearbox malfunction

1998 Mercedes Benz C200 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 240000 miles
Hi, when I select gears the lever moves as normal but the car does not move forward or backwards. I checked the transmission fluid level and it is fine. What can be the problem as it just started all of a sudden without any warning.
Please advice
