Timing chain and clogged ports

1997 Mercedes Benz 430e V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic 110000 miles
I took my car to the shop because of a knocking noise that sounded like a broken fan belt hitting something.
The mechanic looked at it and they came back with a repair quote of $4,240 for parts and labor. The problem was the timing chain and the motor would have to be taken out to get to it. So, I left the car there.
A few days later they called and said there is metal in the engine, there are clogged ports in cylinder heads, and it needs a valve job. Another $1,900. What does all this mean?
