1991 Mercedes Benz 300e Electrical Issue

1991 Mercedes Benz 300e 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 141370 miles
I recently picked up a 1991 300e. I was driving it the other day and when i applied the brakes, the speedometer, tach, and oil pressure gauge all bottomed out. i turned the car off, restarted it and everything was back to normal. but as soon as i applied the brakes again, the same thing happened. the car continues to run, but i lose the gauges. any ideas where i should start.
