Engine Mechanical problem
1967 Mercedes Benz 280sl 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 190k miles

my wife noticed a 'funny noise'' from the engine and 'white smoke' coming from the tailpipe after she stopped. There is no coolant, but also does not appear to be any water on the dipstick. I'll add coolant and check for oil, but I'm thinking head gasket is the only way that water can get into the tailpipe, yes?

any hints on how to troubleshoot? How big a deal am I looking at? What other damage should I be on the lookout for? Is this a 'talented DIY' fixit job or one for the Dr. Mercedes specialists?

thanks for your help.

This definitely sounds like a head gasket. Though it is possible for water to leak around the exhaust manifold into the tail pipe, is this a turbo diesel model? If so it could also leak through the turbo jacket.

As for the replacement itself it is relatively time consuming though not difficult, working on this car is going to be close to working on an eighties model Ford or Chevy. Just be sure you have all of the proper tools and a good machine shop available, other than that take a weekend to disassemble and reassemble, assuming your machine shop is open or can give a one day turnaround, and you ought to be fine.

Definitely the head gasket. Replacing it will not be a problem I think. Its easy. You just need to get a good head gasket.
