1971 Mercedes Benz 280 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

I am nearing the end of my restore project car. the car always ran, just a little slugish but I went forward with paint and interior etc. I have it almost all together and have been driving it around showing off the paint and chrome. I poped the distributer cap and ran a doubled over 2000 grit sandpaper through the points and it never started again. I noticed low voltage at the resister and the resister was hot to the touch. I had another used coil so I hooked it up and it worked for about 2 min then dead again.
