2002 Mercedes Benz 200e gear lever stuck in park

2002 Mercedes Benz 200e 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 55K miles
Hi, the car in question is a 2002, Mercedes 200E Kompressor elegance.
The fault is that the gear lever is stuck in Park eventhough the ignition is switched on and the break pedal is pressed. What is the problem here and what is the solution.
