Mercedes Benz 190e Gas Problem

1984 Mercedes Benz 190e 4 cyl 116,00 miles
When I go to start the car it starts and then stalls. It could take 7 - 8 trys to start the car where it will stay running. It seems like it is not getting gas. After that I can be driving down the highway and it seems to stop taking the gas and wants to stop running. Sometimes it does. Other times if I keep my foot in the same place on the gas petal it picks up again. If I take my foot off the pedal it will stop running. This is an off and on problem. Any ideas?
