1986 Mazda RX7 Manual 128233 miles

i drove my rx7 to san jose a few months ago and ever since i came back i have very poor acceleration. every time i accelerate the car moves very slow and the rpms rev to about 4000 before the car goes and when it finally does it feels as if the car is stuggling to for power , especially uphill and its throughout the rpm band in any gear. my 5th gear doesnt accelerate at all and the shifter pops out of gear only in 4th. this morning i tried to start car but it wouldnt turn over for about 3 min. when i finally got it running white smoke poured out for ten min. other than getting a new clutch and possably new flywheel what could be the issue.

Hi mazdarx71986,

Thank you for the donation.

From the information provided, the clutch is out and apart from the parts you have mentioned, the other problem should be from the engine.

You have been over straining the engine due to the slipping clutch and this might have caused the engine to overheat resulting in loss of compression when it cooled down.

This would cause the difficult starting and after the initial start, oil is being burnt resulting in the smoke. If the problem does not recur again, then there is nothing to worry about but it would be advisable to check the cooling system to see if everything is in order.

Check engine oil level as well.
