I have owned my 2000 Mazda for about 18 months and shortly after buying it the check engine light came on. Long story short, I had both converters replaced, both O2 sensors, new spark plugs, and new coil pack. It was only after the new coil pack did the problem get solved - or so I thought. A few months ago the CEL came back on. I was told that one of the 02 sensors had failed (b/c I went with a cheap brand) and it was replaced with a Bosch. This did not solve the problem and the CEL would come on for a few days and off for a few days. The CEL has been on non-stop over the last couple weeks. Up until today, the car drove great. However, the idling became rough today and actually stalled out twice while waiting at a stop light. The car (when not idling) drives very nice. I have spent enough money on this car already and am at my breaking point!

You will need to scan and get the code(s)and get back to me, I'll help.
engine stalling could be Mass air flow sensor, or problem with the idle control valve. This guide will help us get the codes so we can fix it

Thank you for coming back with codes.
I was good at guessing for the mass air flow sensor :-)
P0171 is your mass air flow sensor.
Remove it and clean it with brake fluid or electronic cleaner , sometime it does the triks.
There could be a vacuum leak downstream of the MAF sensor, or the sensor is just faulty .
if the fuel filter have never been changed, it time to do it.

P1569 , this is a variable tumble control system solenoid valve.it is between the egr valve and egr boost sensor solenoid valve. it may be faulty.
there is also a variable tumble control system vacuum switch. check the ground at the switch and check the switch.
I have send the diagram in your email and it should be clear there.

Engine Performance problem
2000 Mazda Protege Automatic 147000 miles

Hi. My check engine light just came on. I got the car from a friend, who had let it sit for over a year. I've noticed that when I am idling at a light in drive that the car jerks forward a little after a few seconds. It's gotten worse since the light came on, and I have to either switch the car to park or keep the brakes pushed in all the way. Also, when the car lurches, there is a spike in the rvm meter, only up to 3 or so. Anyone have any idea what this is?

Absolutely. There cant be any air leaks between the Mass Airflow Meter and the engine or the PCM will think it is lean

So, if i replace the intake hose, and reset the check engine light will this take care of this problem? And is there anything else that i can fix along with this problem? Like air filter, and cleaning MAF ? and if so, can i clean the MAF with carb cleaner?
Thank you for your time..

Honestly if there is a crack in the hose big enough for you to notice it will lean out the engine. Air is getting in past the MAF, so the PCM doesnt know it is getting in there, but the o2 sensor is reading lean due to the leak. You shouldnt have to do anything besides replace the boot and clear the code. Do not use carb cleaner on the MAF, there are specific cleaners fore that. Carb cleaner will leave a residue that will cause more problems

I wonder if you are on the same boat as me. Look at the P0171 code.

If you have LX model, there was a recall on the MAF

Check engine light on

Have the computer scanned for code/s-you have a problem within the engine management system that caused the CEL to turn on-This is your starting point of diagnosis, finding out what's going on.

Could be caused by a sticky idle air control valve, vacuum leak or maybe even the computer. Try cleaning the Idle air control valve with carb cleaner and also spray around the intake area to see if there is any vacuum leaks, the engine rpm will change slightly when you spray one. What exactly did they do to fix the EGR problem?

I owe a Mazda Protà ©gà © 2000 148,000 miles. My engine came on. I took it to the dealer. The dealer diagnosed it was my spark plugs, Coil wire and a cracked hose. The estimate to fix it was $600. Was it a fair price.
