1992 Other Mazda Models Overheat, High Idle

After a relatively reasonable start up, I can drive my Mx-3 about for around 2 minutes before it begins to overheat. After 5 minutes, a foul burning-rubber smell can be detected. The car will take 2-3 hours cooling. I've never tempted the car beyond this.

So, naturally, my question is what may be the cause of the overheat, and how I might begin fixing it.

The car also suffers from a high idle, but nothing as voracious as the overheat. Is it related in some way? How can I diagnose this problem as well?

The overheating can be caused by a bad engine coolanat temp. Sensor or a bad thermostat. Your high idle can be caused by a vacuum hose leak a dirty throttle plate, a bad throttle position sensor, even an idle air control valve. On the overheating I would start with the thermostat, on the high idol I would start with checking the vacuum hoses for leaks or possibly being unhooked.
