Engine Mechanical problem

1992 mazda mx3. Rpms rev while driving engine turns off and then back on when clutch is pressed.
Sometimes just stops. After sitting for a while it starts back up and runs. I have change distributor cap and wires, alternator and battery recently. It runs a while and than stops. The check engine light flashes occasionally when shifting in low gears usually after sitting all night. but can happen any time. I am on my 5th battery! I had an alarm system put in and that seemed to drain the battery so I had it taken out and this engine stopping while going 70mph started happening. Any ideas?
