Mazda Miata Battery Problem

1992 Mazda Miata 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual 90,000 miles
I turned the key to start as usual, nothing at all happened--as if there was no battery at all, no radio,dash lights etc. assuming it was a bad battery,I used my fully charged battery power pac (which had been successful before) still nothing! EXCEPT when I turned the headlights on they pop up and burn brightly. what gives? thanks (first time user)
