4x4 indicator lights on dashboard

2001 Mazda b3000 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 97000 miles
When I try to engage the 4x4 system, the dashboard lights, both 4x4 High and 4x4 Low, do not show. There is no 4x4 system malfunction indicator, and it sounds as if the system wants to engage.
Is this just a bulb or fuse problem? All other lights seem to be working, and I don't know if the 4x4 indicator lights are on a circuit by themselves.
