Engine Performance problem

Hi this engine has a problem when you start. it has an rough idle and sometimes the idle goes up and come down .I dont have a scanner to detect the problem but I know the engine light stays on. one thing did I notice that the distributor does not advance. when you advance it the car shuts off. And even when you retard it it shuts off. when you rev the engine it sounds like it is choking. need help with problem.
