1987 Mazda b2200 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual 298000 miles

Hello,
I am trying to adjust the electric choke on my carb and am a little confused on how this unit works. I know when the coil spring heats up it expands, but in looking at its relationship to the choke valve (butterfly), when the spring expands, it will be pulling the choke towards the closed position. Can you explain how this works?
