Check automatic tensioner rod projection
rod should project .47 -.55 " (12-14MM) from tensioner body
if not within specification replace tensioner

You do not have to remove the crank pulley or timing belt to change a water pump on a 1992 mazda 929. the water pump is not driven by the timing belt. I have already done this!
