I'd like to start by thanking you guys for my last question it was worth the donation and u were right on target. Now that I have to replace the head due to all bent valves on my other car I got this for a steal and want it to run sound before I take it to the road. So here's the issues I found.
When it starts its having a little trouble turning over, it does eventually or it won't once in a while. It's cranking but just barely not enough. It has a brand new battery and I tested the volts while running and the alternator seems fine as well. All I can think of next is the starter after that but help would be nice. After it does turn over if I rev it, theres a loud noise and it only happens that first time. The fan comes on high n loud and it idles high. Around 2k rpm til it idles down some then rest a little about 12 to 1400 rpm. It only idles high in park every other gear it idles normal.
This Mazda has a hold light which is blinking and speedometer doesnt work, which ive found has something to do with the electrical in the transmission. Im taking it to a dealer for that but I dont want them trying to hose me for a bunch of other things. There's no leaks and the fluids look good and it doesnt overheat. Im gonna change the plugs, it has new wires and eventually, if I think it will be a good car, get a new timing belt just to be safe. Narrowing down the possibilities would be great help. Thanx

If the battery connections are all clean and tight, then it does indeed sounds like the starter is dragging.I would think that the noise on the first rev is going to be something pressure related like a timing belt tensioner or may just be the engine oiling for the first time. The trans issue would probably be fixed by the speedo working. If the PCM cant see what speed the car is doing, it doesnt know what to make the trans do, thus the light

Ok so one day when moving the car id died in gear, I could get it started in neutral but not in park. Then it would go for a second souning find then stall out again. Now even though it sounds very much like it wants to it wont turn over. Could it need a fuel pump and is that easy to fix? I'm thinking either that or maybe distributer. I just got ahold of the service repair manual and am waiting for it to ship, im very tight with money and have, I think, enough know how to work on most anything but I dont want to keep taking things off and replacing them if they arent part of the issue. I dont have a timing gun should I go get one or have my mechanic adjust the timing of I replace the distributer cap or distributer. Im not great at troubleshooting I gues. Thanx

So it now cranks but wont start? Check for spark and fuel pressure before you go and buy anything. Narrow it down. Since it wont crank in Park, but will in neutral, the "neutral safety switch" is either bad or needs to be adjusted so it works in Park

Ok the last couple times I tried to move it so I could work on my other car, it would die quickly then would only restart in neutral but then not at all and its resting in its spot now not starting no matter what now but still cranking hard almost enough to turn over. Im gonna check for spark but how do I check for pressure? I cant move it and usually dont have a helper often.

Start by testing for 12 volts at the small wire on the starter to see if it is getting signal. The NSS might be all done. As far as fuel pressure, go here
