Clutch reapir cost

1997 Mazda 323 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual 92800 miles
I been told that I need to change the clutch of the car. They want to charge me 1,100 pounds for it and I want to know if this a regular budget for this type of work or not?
How difficult it is to change and what would be the consequences of not doing it and waiting until I get the money :S.
