Engine Mechanical problem
1989 Mazda 323 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual 145k miles

My friend has a 323 and just recently broke the alternator belt. I replaced the alt belt & the power steering/AC belt and now the car will not start. I have spark @ the #1 plug, but it doesn't sound right while cranking. I suspected the timing belt, but since I get spark at the plug and seemingly at the proper interval, I feel confident ruling out a broken belt. There was a very strong odor of gasoline while cranking. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like bad timing belt. Remove the oil cap and look inside to see if the cams are moving. If not you have a bad timing belt.

Thanks for all the info, however, we determined that the head was overheated and warped. So, the car went to a donation program
