2006 Mazda 3 Cruise control

Bought the car new 3 1/2 years ago. Last week the cruise control began having intermittent problems. It will initially turn on and engage properly but ONCE you hit the brake or turn off the cruise it will not re-engage. I've disconnected the battery but once again it worked only once and will not work again.
