Lexus RX 300 Gas Problem

2003 Lexus RX 300 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 85,000 miles
My son put some unknown, old gas from various gas cans in our Lexus. Within a few miles it started running rough then after it was shut off, wouldn't start at all. We had it towed to the dealer who said it was the battery. They replaced it (it was old) but now they're telling me the spark plugs need to be replaced and the gas pump looks bad too. What are the possibilities I'm looking at by placing old, cruddy gas in the car. Can that really ruin the plugs and gas pump? I'm assuming the battery had nothing to do with this and just needed replacing.
