1993 Lexus LS 400 Selective Slipping

About six months ago, the tranny started acting up. It would slip upon start up, then settle down. A couple months later, it would work fine on start-up (COLD) then start slipping after car had been driven 7-10 miles. Have changed fluid and filter twice since problem developed. Ordinarily I would say O-rings would be to blame, but here's the quirky short term remedy - when I shut the engne off at a stop light, all works llike the vehicle was new. This lasts for several miles, until I stop again. Then the slipping starts up again. Shut it off and it goes away. Could the problem be a modulator or regulator, as the vehicle searches for a gear shift point? Short of replacing the tranny or rebuilding it, I'm at a loss. Hope you can help.
