1993 Lexus LS 400 Repair Question

1993 Lexus LS 400
I have a 1993 Lexus LS 400 that has developed a problem. The engine is running as if there is no power. The car was running perfectly while driving, then suddenly going down the road it lost all the power. It still idles ok, but will not accelerate well. The exhaust on the right hand side is getting very hot, smoke is visible coming off the pipes. I had thought it could be a plugged catalytic converter, but wasn't sure if it would happen that quick. I was going to remove the exhaust ahead of the cat to see if it runs ok without it, but can't get the rusted exhaust loose. What else would cause the problem to appear so suddenly? If it is a sensor of some sort, how you do retrieve a code without a handheld diagnostic tool?
