1993 Lexus GS 300 Repair Question

1993 Lexus GS 300 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 135652 miles
I have a 93 gs 300 I picked up from a guy with a fuel problem. I replaced the filter, cleaned the tank, and put good gas it in. It starts, but just idles up and down and I have no gas pedal control. While it is running, it also seems like it is backfiring (kinda like it is out of timing)
